Failing to get enough sleep at the time can be very costly during the day. You will lack the concentration need to give your best in everything you do, and mostly, you will appear tired, drowsy and with very low spirits. Many factors may be responsible for your lack of quality sleep at night, and it is imperative that you find out the exact cause and have it addressed as soon as possible. One of the things that may hamper the quality of your sleep is waking-up constantly at night.

It is recommended that you should have at least seven hours of UNINTERRUPTED sleep, but every time you wake up, you interrupt the sleep, thus effectively hurting your sleep pattern. If this happens a couple of times during the night, you can kiss goodbye all the benefits of quality sleep the following. However, all is not lost. If you like to wake up a couple of times in the middle of the night, here are some of the probable reasons of why that may be happening, and what you need to do to reclaim back your sleep-:

Your bedroom is too hot or too cold

Feeling too hot or too cold may make sleeping become very uncomfortable and instead of having uninterrupted sleep, you may find yourself waking up several times during the night due to comfort caused by the temperatures. The recommended temperature for your room should be between 60 and 65 degrees F and anything above or below this range will to be conducive. Remember, your body needs the optimum temperature to relax and to produce and release the hormones you need to fall asleep. Therefore, check and ensure that your room is at the right temperatures so that you are not woken up at night.

You are suffering from eczema

Eczema is a skin condition which causes irritation on the skin and it sometimes becomes extreme at night. If you are suffering from this condition, falling asleep will always be a challenge, and unless the condition is treated or other applicable remedies are found, you will keep on waking up at night. Simply consult a skin doctor for the right remedy of the condition.

Restless leg syndrome

It is estimated that about 17% of Americans suffer from restless leg syndrome. Though the name suggests that it affects the legs only, it can also affect the hands, head, torso and any other body part. It is a condition characterized by an uncontrollable condition on the affected body part and it usually comes with a very strong urge to move the limb or the body part to get relief from the sensation. If you experience this at night, your sleep will most likely to be distracted and you may wake up a couple of times during the night. The best way to deal with this is to consult your doctor so that they can recommend the right solution.

You are using a mattress that is too firm

When you use a mattress that is too firm, there are higher chances that when you sleep, it will create a lot of pressure on places such as your lower back, hips, shoulder, and neck. When the pressure becomes too much, you are likely to wake up and change your sleeping position so that you can relieve pressure on the affected areas. If this is the case, it may be necessary to change your mattress and consider buying one that is not too firm.

Your bed is noisy

Other than sleeping on a mattress that is too firm, your constant waking up during the night may be as a result of sleeping on a noisy bed. There are some beds that when they age, they become too noisy and will give very annoying sounds with every turn you make. Sometimes the noises may become too loud that whenever you turn, you must wake up. That can be very annoying since not everyone may have the ability to sleep and wake up in the same position. The only solution to this is to simply change the bed and get a better and a more sturdy one that will not give those kinds of noises.

You are taking too much alcohol before going to bed

Alcohol may act as a sedative that may make you fall asleep quickly and this is why some people who suffer from insomnia usually resort to it when bedtime comes. Even though it is true that alcohol will help you fall asleep faster, it is also true that it will wake you up from your sleep before it is time to wake up. This is because alcohol does get broken down in the body, and when that happens, its sedative properties are lost, therefore, there will be nothing to keep you asleep. Alcohol usually makes people wake up during the second part of the sleep cycle.

You drink too many fluids late in the evening

Too many fluids late in the evening may also make you wake up quite often at night to visit the toilet. You should be very careful with your fluid intake after 6 pm if you don’t want to ruin your sleep. Additionally, you should make it a habit of visiting the toilet and forcing yourself to pee if you think you have had too many fluids that evening.

You are stressed

Stress and sleep will never find a home in the same body – it is either that you are stressed or you are asleep. Besides, stress will keep your mind in a constant state of activity since you will be thinking about whatever it is that is bothering you. And when you are stressed, your body releases a hormone known as cortisol which will suppress the production and release of sleep hormones such as melatonin. These are never the right conditions to get a smooth and uninterrupted sleep. Find whatever is making you stressed and get it solved as soon as possible.
